Summary

A March 19 circular called for tighter spending controls, fewer journeys and more efficient electricity use.

Prime Minister Hun Manet issued a circular on March 19 announcing nationwide fuel and electricity savings measures as global fuel prices continued to rise. The circular said fuel was an important cost in electricity generation. Although fuel and electricity supply could still meet basic economic and public-service needs, rising costs could affect future generation expenses, prompting advance conservation measures.

For fuel, the Economy and Finance Ministry would strengthen scrutiny of official travel and fuel spending to improve efficiency. The Interior Ministry would guide local authorities in managing traffic, particularly at peak times and during holidays, to reduce fuel wasted in congestion. Ministries were also asked to reduce in-person meetings and official travel and prioritise online working.

For electricity, the Mines and Energy Ministry would prepare conservation guidance and work with the Information Ministry on public communication. Government bodies at all levels were required to implement daily savings measures. The capital and provinces would also cooperate with Electricité du Cambodge to improve public-lighting efficiency and address rising energy costs.
