Summary

Police searched several floors of a Sen Sok hotel on March 22 afternoon, reportedly detaining 49 and seizing computing equipment, 687 phones and 46 Malaysian SIM cards. Initial findings concern an alleged fake-investment scheme.

According to the report, Phnom Penh police raided an alleged online scam location at Jin Bian Me Du Hotel on Street 1019, Trung Moan village, Ou Baek K’am Sangkat, Sen Sok district, on the afternoon of March 22, detaining 49 people.

City police said seven people were detained in the ground-floor security camera room: six Chinese nationals and a Vietnamese woman. Another 26 were detained in accommodation rooms on the second and third floors: 25 Chinese nationals and one Malaysian. On the rooftop, described as the scam operating area, 16 were detained: 12 Chinese nationals, two Malaysians, a Myanmar woman and a Cambodian woman. Seized items included 60 all-in-one computers, 31 desktop system units, one laptop, 687 phones and 46 Malaysian SIM cards.

Initial investigations reportedly indicate the group used Cambodia as a base for a fake-investment scheme targeting victims in Malaysia and other countries and had recently moved from Tboung Khmum province. Specialist officers were continuing legal procedures for the people and evidence and seeking other organisers involved.

The report says the operation was directed by Phnom Penh Unified Command Chairman Khuong Sreng and Lieutenant General Chhuon Narin, deputy national police chief and Phnom Penh police commissioner, with procedural coordination by Deputy Prosecutor Chhay Hong of the Phnom Penh court’s prosecution office.
