An April 1 operation in Svay Rieng detained 107 foreign nationals, including 67 Chinese. Four were gambling suspects, two were scam suspects and 101 others were transferred to immigration authorities.

On April 1, a joint task force led by Hem Sovath, Deputy Commissioner General of Cambodia’s National Police, inspected Shanghai Resort casino in Chantrea district, Svay Rieng province, and detained 107 foreign nationals, including 67 Chinese. The group included 26 women and nationals of four countries: 67 Chinese, 21 Indonesians, two Myanmar nationals and 17 Vietnamese.

Police seized 89 all-in-one computers, 57 laptops, 73 iPads, 1,421 mobile phones, a printer, a monitor and seven safes. Preliminary investigations identified four suspects in the alleged operation of illegal online gambling through the BABY SLOT website, and two others suspected of involvement in telecoms and online scams.

Case files for the four gambling suspects were referred to prosecutors attached to the Svay Rieng Provincial Court of First Instance. The two scam suspects and related evidence were handed to local police for further investigation; the remaining 101 foreign nationals were transferred to the General Department of Immigration for legal procedures. The original report presented the operation as an example of Cambodia’s continuing efforts against transnational online gambling and scams.
