According to the report, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sar Sokha recently instructed traffic police nationwide to strengthen enforcement against drink-driving to maintain road safety and public order.
According to the reported instruction, officers must act immediately when drink-driving is identified through an alcohol test, an assessment of the driver's behaviour at the scene, or a traffic accident caused by drink-driving. They are to handcuff the driver concerned first and then refer the person to the specialist unit for handling.
The report quoted the Interior Ministry as saying the measure aimed to reinforce legal authority and deterrence, curb drink-driving and protect lives and property. Enforcement would become stricter, without the extensive explanations or counselling used previously.
