On April 12, Phnom Penh police conducted a large-scale raid on the Wyndham Grand Phnom Penh Capital Hotel in Daun Penh district, opposite the French embassy in Cambodia, targeting a suspected online scam operation.
The operation was ordered by Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng and Chuon Narin, deputy commissioner-general of the National Police and Phnom Penh police commissioner. KPS’s report published on April 13 said officers detained more than 100 foreign nationals suspected of online fraud and seized a large amount of electronic equipment allegedly used in the operation. An April 13 report by Cambodia’s state news agency, Agence Kampuchea Presse (AKP), on the same operation said a total of 311 people, including 31 women, had been taken into custody.
KPS’s April 13 report also said police were continuing to verify the identities of those involved at the time of that report.
