Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defence Minister Dong Jun officially arrived in Cambodia on the afternoon of April 22. They were due to meet Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Tea Seiha for the first Cambodia–China 2+2 strategic dialogue. The report describes the new mechanism as a sign that bilateral cooperation is reaching a new level.
The report presents the meeting as a discussion directly focused on security, with the two sides expected to address practical defence and security cooperation, particularly joint efforts against human trafficking, drug offences and telecom fraud. It anticipates stronger joint action in the future against grey-market businesses and to protect public safety.
During the visit, Wang Yi and Dong Jun were also scheduled to pay separate courtesy calls on Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet. The report sees the two ministers’ simultaneous visit as an expression of ironclad friendship and a sign of the countries’ wish to strengthen strategic cooperation in politics, military affairs and diplomacy.
