According to the report, Phnom Penh mayor Khuong Sreng called on owners of row houses, apartments and hotels on May 8 to cooperate with police and report online scams at their properties. He warned that relevant conduct could entail legal liability under the law. He said fighting online scams formed part of efforts towards Cambodia’s goal of becoming a high-income country by 2050 and stressed continued action against illegal activities.
The report also said the mayor instructed all 14 district administrations in Phnom Penh to establish dedicated Telegram contact groups with property owners so that suspicious activity could be reported. He also prohibited security personnel from taking part in online scams or soliciting bribes, saying action would be taken against those involved.
The report described the contact mechanism between owners and authorities as a measure to prevent scams within communities, protect residents’ safety and improve Phnom Penh’s image.
