Lieutenant General ម៉ាលី សុជាតា, spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, said:
A Thai man who crossed without permission into Oddar Meanchey province on April 26, 2026 was legally detained by Cambodian authorities. At 10:59 on May 15, he was handed over to Thailand at the Choam International Border Checkpoint in Anlong Veng district, through the Cambodia–Thailand Regional Border Committee (RBC) coordination mechanism.
According to AKP’s report citing Cambodia’s Defence Ministry, Thailand requested coordination on May 13 through the Border Liaison Working Group under the RBC. Following a review and assessment under legal measures, Brigadier General និត ណារ៉ុង, head of the RBC Secretariat for Cambodia’s Military Region 4, was assigned to hand the man over to កាំផាណាត វ៉ាផានស៊ុក (listed in that report as a brigadier general), chief of staff and head of the RBC Secretariat for Thailand’s Second Army Region. The handover took place on the morning of May 15 on humanitarian grounds. A May 15 Thai government Public Relations Department report, credited to the Second Army Region and describing the same handover, listed the rank of the Thai chief of staff who received the man as major general (พลตรี), differing from the brigadier-general rank in AKP’s account.
The ministry said the two sides also discussed strengthening mutual trust, cooperating to prevent and counter false and provocative information, and strictly, fully and sincerely implementing existing agreements to support lasting peace, stability and security along the border.
According to the ministry, Thailand thanked Cambodia for cooperation in addressing daily border challenges, particularly efforts to coordinate the man’s safe return to Thailand and reunion with his family.
