According to Cambodian Ministry of National Defence spokeswoman Lieutenant General Maly Socheata (ម៉ាលី សុជាតា), at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026, Cambodia's Liaison Group (CLG) coordinated a visit by the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), led by its Head of Mission, to observe, verify and report on border conditions around Chok Chey village in O Bei Chon commune, O Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province.
The Cambodian statement said the area had been attacked and that Thai military personnel had installed barbed wire and shipping containers and occupied the area illegally, preventing many Cambodian families from returning to their homes. The observers also examined compliance with all measures in the relevant Joint Statement after the ceasefire took effect. The territorial and occupation descriptions are those of the Cambodian statement.
The statement said the visit underscored the urgent need for the Cambodia–Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) to begin survey and demarcation work under existing agreements, including point three of the Joint Statement of the third special General Border Committee (GBC) meeting on December 27, 2025, so residents could return home without obstruction, safely and with dignity. Cambodia's government and Defence Ministry reiterated their firm, sincere commitment to fully implementing that Joint Statement, the October 26, 2025 Joint Declaration on the peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, and other relevant agreements, to improve conditions, restore normality and secure lasting peace and stability.
