A pregnant female deer reported to weigh 110kg wandered into Bun Rany Senchey Damnak Trayoeng village in Pursat province, where some people allegedly beat it and set dogs on it. The deer struck a wire fence while fleeing, suffered injuries and died in a cassava field, according to the report.
After receiving information about the incident, specialists from the Pursat Provincial Department of Environment and the relevant authorities condemned the actions on May 18, 2026. They said an investigation was underway to identify those involved and take action under the law.
The department described the incident as destruction of natural resources and wildlife. It said the deer belonged to a species listed as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and described the actions as a serious violation of the environmental code.
According to the report, rangers from Phnom Aural Wildlife Sanctuary and local authorities invited monks to conduct a merit-making ceremony for the dead deer and its unborn young at Bun Rany Senchey Damnak Trayoeng pagoda in Phnom Kravanh district, Pursat province.
Authorities urged residents who encounter wildlife straying into villages to help protect the animals and immediately notify the nearest environmental officers or local authorities so that they can provide timely assistance and prevent intentional or unintentional injury or killing.
