On the morning of May 20, 2026, Cambodia’s National Day of Remembrance, Acting Head of State and Senate President Hun Sen called on citizens to remember the suffering of the Khmer Rouge era, prevent such tragedy from recurring and work together to preserve peace.
In his message, Hun Sen recalled that period of brutality and darkness.
He said the vast majority of Cambodians understood the tragedies their people had experienced, including killings, forced displacement, forced labour, and a lack of medicine and food. He said people had even been deprived of the fundamental right to life.
Hun Sen said the day commemorated and offered prayers for the more than three million victims he said had died under the Pol Pot regime.

To prevent such a regime from returning, Hun Sen called on citizens to work together to preserve lasting peace.
He said peace provided opportunities for further development of society, families, communities and the country.
