After two major road crashes in Kampong Chhnang and Svay Rieng provinces killed 14 workers and injured 79 on the morning of Saturday, May 23, Cambodia’s Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training said it would work further with relevant institutions to improve worker-transport safety.
According to the ministry report cited in the original article, as of 10am that Saturday, 93 workers had been killed or injured: 14 dead, 15 seriously injured and 64 with minor injuries. The first crash, between a heavy goods vehicle and a worker-transport vehicle in Sala Lek 5 village, Ou Ruessei commune, Kampong Tralach district, Kampong Chhnang province, affected 53 people, including 50 women. Nine died, including eight women; nine were seriously injured, including eight women; and 35 suffered minor injuries, including 34 women. Five died, including two women; six were seriously injured, including four women; and 29 suffered minor injuries, including 18 women.
The labour ministry expressed sorrow over the workers’ deaths. The original article recalled an earlier pledge by Labour Minister Heng Sour to arrange safe and comfortable transport for factory workers by 2027. These crashes highlighted continuing challenges to worker-transport safety.
