On Sunday, May 24, 2026, US President Donald Trump said he had told his diplomatic representatives not to rush into an agreement with Iran because “time is on our side,” hours after announcing that a deal with Tehran had been largely negotiated.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that the blockade would remain in full force and effect until an agreement was reached, certified and signed, and that both sides must take their time and get it right. He said there could be no mistakes and described the relationship with Iran as becoming more professional and productive. Expectations of a breakthrough in the three-month-old war had risen after he said an emerging agreement with Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He did not specify what else it would include, saying the final aspects and details were under discussion and would be announced soon.
US and Iranian media reports said the agreement would provide a framework to end months of fighting, lift the US shipping blockade on Iran and reopen the waterway that Iran had closed through threats to attack shipping.
Those reports said arrangements for Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, which Washington had insisted it give up, would be negotiated within 30 to 60 days. By: ឡាយ កុល
