Kandal Governor Kuoch Chamroeun announced a reward of 2 million riel for people providing information on concealed online-scam operations that led to a crackdown. He also pledged confidentiality for informants whose information enabled enforcement action.
In a post on his official Facebook page early on Tuesday, he wrote: “In Kandal, any patriotic Cambodian who confidentially provides us with information about the location and conduct of online scams in the province that enables a crackdown will receive a reward of 2 million riel from me, and I will maintain confidentiality.”
The governor’s announcement came two days after Acting Head of State Hun Sen warned that people involved in online-scam crimes, or those failing to enforce the law under the government’s orders, would not be shown leniency.
Hun Sen said: “There can be no leniency when you refuse to act or become involved [in online-scam crimes]. Do not say, ‘I am the child of a leader who struggled for many years.’ Do not say, ‘I devoted my life to the party for many years.’ Do not say, ‘I served the nation for so many years.’ No. You are using the guise of a state official to commit crimes, or holding an official position where you refuse to give orders or take action.”
