Summary

Police said a May 28 raid on Phnom Penh’s 6668 Hotel led to the detention of six Chinese men and the seizure of electronic equipment suspected of use in online scams, suspected drugs and ammunition. Investigations were continuing.

Officers searched the 6668 Hotel in Phnom Penh’s Sen Sok district on May 28, according to a May 29 report by Agence Kampuchea Presse citing police. The operation was ordered by Phnom Penh Governor Khoung Sreng and municipal police chief Chuon Narin.

Police said six Chinese men were detained in connection with immigration and drug violations and suspected online scams. The cases remained under investigation.

According to police, two of the six held passports, although one had an expired visa; two had no passports; and two were using forged passports.

Police reported seizing three laptops, 74 mobile phones, one package of white material suspected to be drugs, 14 tablets marked WY suspected to be drugs, five rounds of handgun ammunition, one Chinese police identification card and four sets of Cambodian Royal Gendarmerie uniforms on the hotel’s fifth floor.

Police said specialist officers examined the seized computers and phones and concluded that the equipment was suspected of use in online scams.

According to the report, three people facing immigration issues were handed to the relevant investigation bureau of the Phnom Penh Municipal Police. The hotel manager and the two people holding forged passports were handed to Sen Sok district police. The electronic equipment and suspected drugs went to the relevant specialist bureaus for further investigation. The manager, identified as CHEN GUILIN, reportedly agreed to an administrative fine for accommodating people staying illegally.
