Cambodia’s Ministry of Commerce announced the official registration of four promising speciality products as geographical indications (GI).
The ministry said the measure was an important step towards raising the international profile and brand value of Cambodian products, protecting the intellectual property of producer communities, and creating opportunities for future entry into international markets and overseas recognition.
The four newly registered geographical indications are:
• Phnom Srok Golden Silk — a handwoven product using natural dyes, with fine, strong and glossy silk fibres;
• Koh Kong Mud Crab — harvested in mangrove areas, with firm meat and a distinctive sweet taste;
• Kampong Thom Cashew Nut — valued for large, full kernels, a crisp texture and a rich buttery or milky flavour;
• Oddar Meanchey Mango — firm, crisp and juicy, with a balanced sweet-sour taste and suitability for processing into different products.
The ministry said GI registration could help prevent imitation and misuse of product names and protect their geographical identity, while supporting traditional skills, local cultural heritage, tourism in production areas and environmental protection.
It also said registration could increase added value and international competitiveness, helping pave the way for future overseas GI recognition and protection in global markets.
