Interior Ministry Secretary of State General ប៉ោ ភក្តិ said technological progress brought convenience but also a new security challenge for Cambodia in the form of transnational cybercrime. Criminals are using online systems to commit fraud, steal data and damage property.
He said these illegal activities damage individuals’ and families’ economic and financial well-being, undermine the digital trust on which digital-society development rests, and affect mental stability and public order, a priority of the safe village, commune and urban-commune policy.
He made the remarks at the official launch of the Interior Ministry television station’s “Educational Short Dramas” on June 19. He urged greater public vigilance to avoid online-fraud losses and said such scams cause substantial annual losses worldwide and in Cambodia.
Lieutenant General ហោ សំអាត, director-general of the ministry’s General Department of Digital Technology and Educational Outreach, said rapid information and communication technology development had benefited Cambodia and the wider world by improving and expanding the effectiveness of work and business.
He added that, despite digital technology’s major benefits, responsible and highly cautious use was necessary because it is used by people with both good and harmful intentions.
