To celebrate the ninth anniversary of the inscription of the Sambor Prei Kuk temple site on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, from 8 July 2017 to 8 July 2026, the Ministry of Tourism, Kampong Thom provincial administration and partner organisations held a cycling and obstacle-running event at the site on the morning of 5 July 2026. Its theme was “The road to Ishanapura, the pre-Angkorian capital of Chenla”.
The event was presided over by Tourism Minister Huot Hak and Kampong Thom Governor នួន ផារ័ត្ន. Both joined athletes and residents in cycling to show support for tourism, sport and the conservation of the nation’s cultural heritage.
The event attracted more than 2,000 Cambodian and international athletes, who cycled and ran over obstacles along natural trails and around ancient temples, creating a lively atmosphere and showcasing Kampong Thom’s cultural and nature-based tourism potential.
As well as celebrating the ninth anniversary of Sambor Prei Kuk’s World Heritage recognition, the event encouraged residents and Cambodian and international visitors to learn more about the site’s historical, civilisational and architectural value.
The event also reflected the government’s commitment to linking sport, tourism, culture and heritage conservation as drivers of local economic growth and of increased visitor interest in Cambodia’s valuable historic sites.
