A report that a passenger may have mistakenly transferred US$5,200 instead of 5,200 riel while paying for an app-booked ride has recently drawn widespread attention on Cambodian social media. The authenticity of the incident and subsequent handling still require further confirmation and responses from the parties involved or the platform.
According to information circulating on social media, a woman recently booked a tuk-tuk through PassApp in Sihanoukville, travelling from near GM Nails to Prince Mall. The journey was about 2.42 kilometres and took around eight minutes. The booking showed that the trip had been completed, with a fare of 5,200 riel.
However, a social media poster claimed that the woman may have made an error while paying, transferring US$5,200 to the driver instead of the required 5,200 riel. After noticing the mistake, she tried to contact the driver to resolve the matter but had not reached him at the time of the report.
Screenshots of the booking circulating online showed vehicle number SV6459, a white Bajaj RE three-wheeler.
The report prompted online discussion. Many commenters said that, if it was true, the recipient should contact the passenger proactively to help verify and properly resolve the mistaken transfer. Others reminded the public to check the currency, amount and recipient account details carefully when using mobile banking or electronic payments, to avoid financial losses caused by mistakes.
At the time of the report, neither PassApp nor the parties involved had issued a formal statement. The details of the incident still required further verification.
