Summary

Heavy rain has affected roads, crops and infrastructure in several Cambodian provinces. The report cites a July 13 forecast of further rain through July 15, with thunderstorms and strong winds in some areas, and calls for precautions.

The outer circulation of Bavi, this year’s ninth typhoon, has brought persistent heavy rain to several parts of Cambodia in recent days. Flooding in some provinces has affected road traffic, crops and infrastructure to varying degrees.

In Samlaut district, Battambang province, continuous rain has caused severe flooding in some areas, damaging extensive crops and some infrastructure. A recently repaired road bridge was completely destroyed by floodwaters. On July 12, local authorities issued an urgent notice calling on people living along rivers to take precautions and stay away from fast-flowing water, with a particular reminder to parents to keep children safe.
Kampong Seila district in Preah Sihanouk province has also been affected by floods, with water covering some roads and disrupting traffic. Local authorities advised residents and passing motorists to pay attention to safety and travel cautiously.
Kampot province has also experienced heavy rain in recent days. Severe flooding on several roads has caused some vehicles to stall while driving through water, inconveniencing local residents.
In a weather forecast issued on July 13, Cambodia’s Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology said Bavi, the ninth typhoon, would continue to bring rain to many parts of the country over the following three days, July 13–15, with thunderstorms and strong winds in some areas.
Meteorological authorities said that although Bavi’s centre would not pass directly through Cambodia, its outer circulation would strengthen the southwest monsoon, increasing rain in the Mekong basin and coastal areas. Rain was expected to be widespread along the coast, with rainfall coverage possibly reaching 50% in Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Koh Kong and Kep provinces.
No casualties had been reported from the flooding at the time of the report. Cambodian authorities urged the public to follow weather developments and warnings and stay away from dangerous waters. They also called on local administrations to prepare for flood control, drainage and emergencies to reduce the impact of continued rain.
