On July 12, a fishing boat capsized and sank in rough seas off Cambodia’s Koh Kong province, killing both fishermen aboard.
According to local information, the accident occurred on the morning of July 12 while the vessel was fishing. Amid recent adverse coastal weather, winds and waves at the site suddenly intensified. Strong winds and large waves caused the boat to lose control, capsize and ultimately sink completely.
After the accident, local departments and residents promptly launched a search and rescue operation at sea. Following continuous searches, rescuers found one victim’s body at noon on July 13. The deceased was reportedly the vessel’s captain and owner. The body was taken to a nearby pier and handed over to the family for funeral arrangements. Search and related work concerning the other victim were continuing.
Cambodia is currently in its rainy season. The continuing southwest monsoon has brought unstable and frequently changing coastal weather, with heavy rain, strong winds and large waves possible in many coastal waters.
The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology issued a safety reminder about elevated weather and sea-condition risks off coastal provinces. Fishermen should closely monitor weather warnings and conditions at sea, avoid fishing during strong winds, large waves and other adverse weather, and take precautions to prevent accidents at sea.
