Summary

The report says Cambodian anti-drug authorities destroyed more than 5 tonnes of seized drugs in Kandal province on the morning of July 21. It describes the destruction as part of efforts to curb drug circulation and illegal trafficking.

On the morning of July 21, Cambodia’s anti-drug authorities held a mass drug-destruction ceremony in Ponhea Leu district, Kandal province. They destroyed various types of seized drugs weighing more than 5 tonnes in total, in an effort to deter drug-related offences.

According to the report, the drugs being destroyed had lawful provenance and clearly established ownership: they consisted of items seized in the country’s routine anti-drug enforcement operations and contraband confiscated in accordance with the law following the conclusion of drug cases by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court of First Instance. The report said all destruction procedures strictly followed the relevant laws and regulations.

Cambodian authorities said mass destruction of seized drugs was a key measure to curb their circulation, reduce harm to society and combat illegal drug trading. They said the government would continue intensifying anti-drug enforcement and controls, targeting illegal production, transport and sales throughout the supply chain, strengthening society’s defences against drugs and working to curb their spread.
