A July 20, 2026 workshop at the Ministry of Tourism discussed plastic-free tourism zones in Phnom Penh. The official presiding encouraged authorities and tourism businesses to reduce plastic waste in cities and along the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac rivers.

(Phnom Penh): On July 20, 2026, ឈុន មករា, Director General of the General Department of Tourism Industry Management, representing Tourism Minister Huot Hak, presided over the opening of a workshop on establishing Plastic-Free Tourism Zones in Phnom Penh at the ministry’s headquarters.

The workshop was attended by Ministry of Tourism leaders and civil servants, representatives of the Phnom Penh Capital Administration, UNDP Cambodia representatives, local authorities including deputy district governors and commune chiefs, and many tourism business owners.

ឈុន មករា said that establishing plastic-free tourism zones was an important part of supporting the “Visit Cambodia in Green Season” campaign and the “Clean City, Clean Resort, Good Service and Good Hospitality” competition movement, to improve the appearance of destinations and attract domestic and international tourists. He linked the initiative to implementation of the Royal Government’s Pentagonal Strategy–Phase I, with a focus on promoting a circular economy and sustainable development and supporting the green-season campaign.

The Director General also encouraged authorities at all levels, destination managers and all business operators to work together to reduce plastic waste in cities and along the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac rivers, helping transform Cambodia into a green, high-quality tourism destination.
