On July 23, 2026, an inspection team from the General Directorate of Environmental Protection, led by ឡៅ គឹមឈី, a deputy department director, worked with the Kampot provincial environment department to inspect two pig farms in ជំពូវ័ន្ត commune, Chum Kiri district, Kampot province. The visit followed reports of foul odours and dirty waste discharges affecting rice fields and residents’ living conditions.
The report says inspectors found that the pig farm named ហែម ម៉ាច had discharged wastewater from a storage pond into residents’ rice fields, causing odours that disturbed neighbours. It was also operating without preparing the initial environmental impact assessment report required by law.
The pig farm named អ៊ុត ប៊ុនហេង was likewise reported to be generating foul odours from its pig housing and operating without an initial environmental impact assessment report.
Following the inspection, Environment Ministry officers required both farms to seal off their connections to public canals immediately, clean the pig housing and take effective measures to reduce odours. Both farms were also required to prepare and submit environmental impact assessment reports to the ministry for review and comments under the applicable procedures.
The ministry stated that operating without an environmental impact assessment report violated Article 668 of the Environment and Natural Resources Code. It said discharging wastewater into residents’ rice fields violated Article 156, while causing foul odours violated Article 161 of the same code.
The ministry also required the two farm owners to take responsibility for compensating for the impacts and environmental damage they had caused, in accordance with applicable law.
