Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior said in a July 31 statement that a 20-year-old Singaporean woman who had been reported missing had been found safe in Phnom Penh. Following an investigation, authorities said the case did not involve human trafficking, online scams or any form of abuse.
The woman was identified as Siti Aishah Siregar Binte Sahat Siregar, also known as Eve. She flew from Singapore to Techo International Airport in Phnom Penh on July 28 and had arranged an apartment booking in advance through an agent. Dissatisfied with strict family rules, she travelled to Cambodia without permission and deliberately cut off contact with her family, leaving a letter before her departure. After losing contact, her family sought help to find her. Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration and Phnom Penh police conducted a joint search and located her at the apartment. Investigators found that a Cambodian university student she had met through an online game had picked her up at the airport and had only helped her settle in and go sightseeing. The woman confirmed that she had travelled voluntarily and had not been detained, threatened or abused. She is now safe and has received assistance from local authorities, bringing the search to an end.
