The restoration and reinforcement project for the western wall and corner stairs of the Tonle Om Gate (the south gate of Angkor Thom) has achieved approximately 80% completion as of October 2026. The specialized team is currently accelerating the final phase of work to prepare for completion in the near future.

Mr. Mao Sokny, head of the restoration project from the Department of Conservation of Temples and Archaeology, reported that the reinforcement work on the 15-meter-long wall has been completed. Ongoing work includes soil compaction, sealing stone joints, and topping with soil to further strengthen the structural integrity. In addition, the 23 internal corner stairs have been rearranged and connected to the wall body, which not only helps brace against the wall but also enhances the aesthetic beauty and historical value of the entire gate.

Regarding technical aspects, the project leader explained that the site has been implemented rigorously in accordance with ancient standards, combined with some modern technologies to ensure long-term sustainability. The work began with reinforcing the foundation through compaction of ancient soil layers and arranging the corner stairs continuing from the remaining old pedestals, using compacted clay and lime mortar as a protective bedding layer.

The Tonle Om Gate is one of the most attractive tourist destinations within the Angkor park, where domestic and international tourists always stop to take photos, view the Churning of the Ocean of Milk bas-reliefs, and climb up to admire the scenery along the ancient wall.

Mr. Mao Sokny expressed strong confidence that the achievements of this restoration will help revitalize the splendor of the former Angkor Thom capital's walls and ensure robust durability for hundreds of years to come. Moreover, the specialized team plans to continue conservation missions at the critical points of all five gates of Angkor Thom sequentially.
