Read original

Summary

Cambodia reaffirmed its opposition to chemical weapons at the UN First Committee and called for implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and stronger international cooperation.

Cambodia reiterated its opposition to the use of chemical weapons under any circumstances and called on all countries to strictly comply with international conventions and international law. Nov Soksamnang, First Secretary of Cambodia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, recently outlined the Cambodian position while attending discussions in New York on the First Committee of the UN General Assembly on the issue of weapons of mass destruction.

Nov Soksamnang said that any use of chemical weapons is unacceptable and those responsible must bear international legal responsibility in accordance with the law. Cambodia firmly supports the comprehensive and effective implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and affirmed the role of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in advancing a world free of chemical weapons.

Cambodia also called on all member states to build consensus, strengthen cooperation, strictly fulfill their obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention, comply with international law, and jointly maintain international peace and security. The remarks once again reflected Cambodia's support for prohibiting chemical weapons and multilateral cooperation mechanisms.
