Emergency teams continued an urgent search for at least seven people feared trapped after a 16-storey building under construction collapsed completely in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, on Friday, 23 October.

According to authorities, 66 of the 67 construction workers at the site escaped safely. The search continued for other people feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The report noted that construction has expanded rapidly in Nairobi, with high-rise buildings appearing across the city. It cited 86 building collapses between 2009 and 2019, causing an estimated 200 deaths. It also highlighted problems involving inadequate technical standards, cuts to material costs and disregard for building regulations.
