On October 22, 2026, Cambodia’s Permanent Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in Charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers, Vongsey Vissoth, presided over and witnessed a ceremony at the National Museum to receive feasibility study results for its enhancement, modernisation and expansion. Minister of Culture and Fine Arts Phoeurng Sackona received the study from the French Ambassador to Cambodia. Cambodian and international expert representatives also attended.

Vongsey Vissoth thanked the French government, the French Embassy in Cambodia, the French agency for international technical cooperation, the Guimet Museum of Asian Art and other institutions for their support. He said the National Museum played an important role in preserving cultural heritage, advancing academic research and sustaining national identity. Completion of the study provided a foundation for the museum’s future upgrading and development.

He also said Cambodia and France had more than 150 years of cultural cooperation and were advancing the modernisation of the National Archives, the National Library and the National Museum.

He expressed hope that French President Emmanuel Macron’s planned visit to Cambodia and Cambodia’s hosting of the 20th Francophonie Summit would provide opportunities to deepen bilateral cooperation in cultural heritage protection. He also hoped such cooperation would strengthen the service capacity of Cambodia’s cultural institutions and help them better preserve and present the nation’s history and culture.
