Summary

Authorities in Melaka arrested 63 people in three suspected scam operations in Klebang, Ayer Keroh and Melaka Raya, seizing phones, computers and other evidence.

Malaysian law enforcement agencies recently carried out several operations in Melaka, dismantling three suspected cross-border scam centres and arresting 63 people, including people from mainland China and Taiwan.

Following a month of intelligence gathering, Malaysia’s Immigration Department and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission raided a scam call centre disguised as a guesthouse in Klebang. They arrested 34 people: 31 Chinese nationals, one person from Taiwan and two local men. Investigations indicated that the operation had been running for about three months, using social media and promises of high returns to carry out investment scams targeting South Koreans. Authorities seized 309 mobile phones, 45 computers, scam scripts and other items valued at approximately RM318,600.

In two other operations, police raided a villa at a resort in Ayer Keroh and a hotel in Melaka Raya, arresting 29 people in total. The first involved romance scams targeting Vietnamese people, with 14 Vietnamese nationals and one Chinese national arrested. The second allegedly involved fraudulent investment schemes targeting Chinese citizens, leading to the arrest of 14 Chinese suspects.

Police seized computers, mobile phones, passports, SIM cards and networking equipment at the two locations. Those involved have been detained in accordance with the law or referred to the relevant authorities for investigation. Police are continuing to investigate the organisational structures, methods and wider connections of the scam operations.
