Closures of hotel and accommodation businesses in Thailand rose by 42% in the first nine months of 2026 as tourism demand fell sharply.
A total of 148 hotel and accommodation businesses registered closures between January and September. Over the same period, new business registrations in the sector fell by 31.2% to just 779.
These figures reflect major challenges for Thailand's hotel industry as the number of international tourists intending to stay in the country has declined sharply.
Thailand has about 15,000 hotel and accommodation businesses, of which 98% are small and medium-sized enterprises providing employment for more than 430,000 people.
The president of the Chiang Mai provincial tourism business association said some hotels had closed permanently, while others were continuing to announce closures to reduce costs. Text: “រិទ្ធី” (credit as written in the source)
