Prominent Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong was sentenced by a Hong Kong court to 10 years in prison on Thursday, November 5, for conspiracy to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security.
Wong rose to international prominence during the 2014 Umbrella Movement and has already spent nearly six years in prison. Following this sentence, he is expected to remain imprisoned until late 2036.
The former student leader, who turned 30 last month, had previously been expected to be released this coming January after serving a four-year, eight-month sentence for conspiracy to commit subversion under the national security law imposed by Beijing.
However, Hong Kong authorities used the same national security law to bring a new charge against Wong in June last year, accusing him of conspiring with foreign countries and entities to seek economic sanctions against the financial hub of Hong Kong and China. By: Rithy
