Beijing: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China would continue playing a constructive role in helping restore peace between Thailand and Cambodia. The original report characterises the fighting that began on December 7 as a Thai military invasion of Cambodian territory.
Wang made the remarks in separate telephone conversations on December 18 with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow.
According to the report, both Cambodia and Thailand expressed willingness during the calls to ease tensions and implement a ceasefire.
Wang further stressed that, as a friend and close neighbour of Cambodia and Thailand, China did not want to see the two sides confront each other with arms and was deeply saddened by civilian deaths and injuries caused by the conflict.
