Summary

Former Indian parliamentarian Vijayasai Reddy criticised Thai troops’ reported destruction of a Hindu deity statue in Cambodia in a December 23 post on X, condemning attacks on faith and heritage.

A former Indian parliamentarian posted on social media on December 23 criticising Thai troops for using machinery to demolish a statue of a Hindu deity inside Cambodia’s border. The report says the demolition occurred while Thai forces were using military force to attack Cambodian territory.

Vijayasai Reddy, a former Indian politician, wrote on X: “Destroying an idol representing a Hindu deity under the pretext of a border dispute is unacceptable. Whether or not the statue was built by the Cambodian side, attacking religious belief and cultural heritage shows a lack of understanding.”

He continued: “Thailand and Cambodia are both Buddhist countries, but history records repeated persecution of Hindu temples and attempts to erase them. Violence against sacred symbols cannot be washed away merely with slogans. No religion can build its own peace by destroying the religious beliefs of others.”
