Education, Youth and Sport Ministry spokesperson Khuon Vichhika said the ministry was investigating to establish the facts and determine action over an allegation that a school principal had asked an employment-agreement teacher for one month’s salary.
On January 5, a Facebook page named “Kru” (Teacher) posted: “An employment-agreement teacher reported that a primary-school principal asked for one month of their salary, as with all contract teachers teaching at that school.” Deputy Prime Minister and Education, Youth and Sport Minister Dr Hang Chuon Naron commented: “This is a bad practice. Which school is it? Dismiss [the person] to set an example.”
Teachers hired under employment agreements are selected by the Ministry of Civil Service to teach in primary schools facing teacher shortages. Contract teachers, by contrast, are selected by education, youth and sport departments with the involvement of civil service departments.
Dr Kan Putthy, director of the Primary Education Department, has now visited the location concerned by the allegation. The working team is preparing a report on the principal’s case for Dr Hang Chuon Naron and is awaiting a decision.
