Summary

Spokesperson Khim Finan described coordination over fuel supplies and talks with fertiliser suppliers, while warning of global price pressure.

Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry spokesperson Khim Finan said on March 15 that the ministry had introduced two urgent intervention measures to address farmers’ concerns about fuel and agricultural fertiliser. The measures responded to the impact of the war in the Middle East on agriculture, particularly rising fuel prices.

The first measure concerns fuel and fuel gas. The Agriculture Minister had discussed with the Minister of Mines and Energy and the Minister of Commerce how to jointly help ensure fuel supplies for agriculture. The ministry had instructed agriculture departments throughout the country to closely monitor actual conditions in their respective areas and work with the mines and energy departments and commerce departments to intervene immediately if abnormal price increases or fuel-supply shortages arose.

The second concerns fertiliser. The minister has met major importers and distributors. A preliminary assessment indicated that shortages, particularly of urea, were not expected, although global market pressure could push prices up. Suppliers were asked to maintain reasonable prices for the coming planting season.
