According to the report, police from several Thai jurisdictions jointly announced a transnational telecommunications fraud case on March 20. The investigation began after a retired civil servant was allegedly defrauded of 760,000 baht last year by people posing as hospital and State Audit Office officials. Police said the group moved and laundered money through layers of mule accounts, with more than 20 victims and total losses exceeding two million baht.
Police subsequently raided three Bangkok locations and detained six suspects. The report says the principal suspect and most members were Chinese nationals, with some intercepted while withdrawing money at banks. Officers seized more than 10 million baht in cash and 229 evidence items, including luxury cars, jewellery and designer bags, with a total value exceeding 14 million baht.
The report says all six suspects denied the allegations and were referred for further proceedings over suspected transnational crime, fraud and money laundering.
