Summary

The report sets out conservation measures, the energy minister’s reassurance and residents’ complaints about household gas access.

Cambodian ministries and institutions have introduced fuel and electricity conservation measures as the war in the Middle East pushes up oil and gas prices.

On March 17, the Information Ministry urged use of natural daylight and checks on electrical equipment before leaving work.

The Interior Ministry allowed some staff to work from home, excluding the National Police, General Secretariat, General Department of Prisons and General Department of Administration. Traffic police were asked to ease congestion at peak times to reduce fuel consumption. Other measures include setting air conditioning to 25°C, switching it off before departure, and turning off lights and appliances in empty rooms.

The State Secretariat of Border Affairs and Electricité du Cambodge adopted similar measures. The report says the global crisis is affecting Cambodian fuel, transport and gas prices. On March 23, Mines and Energy Minister Keo Rottanak urged people not to panic over fears of fuel and LPG shortages and called for conservation of fuel, LPG and electricity.

Meanwhile, some Phnom Penh residents complained that they could not buy household gas at some stations because supplies were being reserved for PassApp tuk-tuk vehicles.
