Summary

The provincial tourism department and មើម៉េធ swimming school held an April 7–10 course for 30 trainees, combining theory and practice to strengthen water safety and rescue skills.

The Preah Sihanouk Provincial Department of Tourism and មើម៉េធ swimming school jointly organised a Level 1 Pool and Beach Lifeguard Training course for 30 trainees from hotels and other establishments, aiming to strengthen visitor safety in the province’s coastal areas. The course ran for four days, April 7–10.

Provincial Tourism Department Director តាំង សុចិត្តគ្រឹស្នា said that, alongside attention to hygiene, safety and tourism standards, the department worked to strengthen the capabilities and management of coastal lifeguards and had held such training annually. This course further developed the capabilities of 30 guards from resorts and other private-sector establishments.

Pool lifeguard lead trainer លី សៀងម៉ៃ said the Level 1 course combined theory and practical exercises. Trainees from the private sector, hotels and beach-guard services had paid close attention, and the knowledge and skills acquired could be used in their future work.

He expressed confidence that the trainees would apply what they had learned during the four-day course to help coordinate work and protect the security and safety of tourists visiting destinations in Preah Sihanouk province.

The trainer urged trainees to practise the lessons and theory further themselves, so they could establish whether they had the practical ability needed to rescue a person in difficulty. He also urged visitors to the province’s beaches and hotel pools to exercise caution, stressing that even highly capable lifeguards could struggle to rescue people in time if visitors were excessively careless.

The course combined theory with practice in pools and at the beach. Its subjects included: 1. risk assessment and beach safety management; 2. advanced in-water rescue techniques; 3. team rescue and situation management; 4. professional-level first-aid and CPR training; 5. rescue equipment use; 6. boat operation, left and right directional control and recovery from capsizing; 7. communication in emergencies; 8. communication techniques; 9. emergency rescue action plans; 10. legal and regulatory considerations when making contact with a casualty during rescue; and 11. personal safety and professional conduct for beach lifeguards.
