Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism and the People’s Government of China’s Hainan Province agreed to explore the possibility of signing a tourism cooperation memorandum of understanding to strengthen promotion and visitor exchanges.
On May 21, 2026, Cambodian Tourism Minister Huot Hak led a delegation and private sector representatives in talks with Hainan Governor Liu Xiaoming and his colleagues in Haikou to strengthen tourism cooperation.
Liu welcomed the Cambodian delegation and expressed interest in Cambodia’s political stability, development and tourism potential. He highlighted cultural, historical and natural attractions, including Angkor Wat and coastal destinations, as resources that could attract more Chinese visitors.
The two sides discussed promoting direct flight links between Hainan and Cambodia’s major destinations, including Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Preah Sihanouk province, to facilitate travel and people-to-people exchanges. They also encouraged private tourism businesses to develop joint tour packages and promotional activities.
Huot Hak asked Hainan to promote Cambodia’s tourism potential to Chinese audiences through media networks, tourism platforms and travel businesses. He also proposed familiarisation trips for Hainan tourism companies, journalists, content creators and opinion leaders to experience Cambodia and expand promotion in the Chinese market.
Hainan is one of China’s important international tourism destinations, with coastal, cultural and leisure attractions. Reports on a separate exchange with Hainan tourism businesses said the participating companies had previously helped bring more than 300,000 Chinese visitors to Cambodia and outlined a target of attracting 500,000 through visa-free travel and tourism promotion.
