Summary

In a statement issued on the night of June 2, 2026, the Preah Sihanouk provincial administration supported Cambodia’s use of compulsory conciliation under UNCLOS to address the maritime dispute with Thailand.

The Preah Sihanouk provincial administration announced its full support for Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet’s firm decision to pursue compulsory conciliation under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to address maritime issues with Thailand. This was set out in a statement of support issued by the administration on the night of June 2, 2026.

The administration described the government’s decision and specific action to address overlapping maritime areas peacefully and on the basis of international law, through compulsory conciliation under UNCLOS, as the most appropriate conciliatory solution. It said international conciliation experts would help secure justice for both countries, preserve sovereignty and territorial integrity, and build a border characterised by friendship, peace, cooperation, mutual respect and development.

The administration stated: “We call on Cambodian citizens of every political tendency to unite in full support of the Cambodian government under Prime Minister Hun Manet’s wise leadership and clear, long-term vision, to resolutely protect Cambodia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty with determination, conscience and love of country and land. We must safeguard peace and political stability and place confidence in peaceful settlement through international mechanisms and law, which offers the best way to protect the highest interests of our nation, homeland and people while ensuring good relations between the two countries.”

“We also express our thanks, gratitude, praise and appreciation for the courage of all branches of the armed forces that have been and remain stationed to protect territorial integrity along the border. We pledge continued support and encouragement for Cambodian forces in carrying out their duties to protect territorial integrity and sovereignty, and to safeguard our nation’s independence, peace, political stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the administration added.
