At the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva, Switzerland, on July 8, 2026, Cambodia raised recent human rights developments along the Cambodia–Thailand border. In its intervention under agenda items 2 and 3, Cambodia called for the safe, voluntary and dignified return of internally displaced people.
Cambodia also called for migrant workers to be protected from discrimination and violence, and for full respect for international humanitarian and human rights law, according to a press release from Cambodia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva.
Cambodia also reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with UN human rights mechanisms, including continued cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia.
According to the report, as of July 8, 2026, more than 20,000 displaced Cambodians, including 10,674 women and 6,066 children, had still been unable to return home because Thai troops were obstructing them after illegally occupying and destroying their villages and houses following the entry into force of the ceasefire.
