The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications warned users about attachments sent through Telegram and other messaging apps with extensions including .exe, .bat, .vbs, .ps1, .sh, .msi and .scr. It advised checking file sources and extensions and keeping antivirus software updated.

Phnom Penh: The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPTC) has issued a notice urging the public to exercise greater caution over attachments received through Telegram and other messaging apps. Cybercriminals are using files with certain extensions to steal data or install malware on users’ digital devices.

The ministry advised people not to open, click on or run files with the following extensions:

  • .exe
  • .bat
  • .vbs
  • .ps1
  • .sh
  • .msi
  • .scr

The ministry said these types of files can contain malware that may steal personal information, passwords or banking account details, or allow unknown people to control users’ devices remotely.

To protect digital security, the ministry recommended that users take the following measures:

  • Open only files sent from trusted sources.
  • Check file extensions carefully before opening them.
  • Do not click Run or Install if you are unsure of the file’s source.
  • Install antivirus software and update it regularly.

The ministry stressed that users’ vigilance is an important measure in protecting personal data and the information systems of institutions and organisations against cyberattacks.
