On July 16, Cambodia’s national anti-drug authority held a mass destruction ceremony in Preah Sihanouk province. Various drugs and drug-making tools linked to 190 drug cases were destroyed in accordance with the law, with a total reported weight of more than 2.3 tonnes.
The ceremony was held as part of publicity activities marking the June 26 International Day against Drug Abuse. 棉威烈, Secretary-General of the national anti-drug authority, attended.
According to the national anti-drug authority’s notice, the destroyed drugs were linked to 190 cases: 165 in which court judgments had taken effect and the substances had been confiscated according to law, and 25 carried out under court-issued destruction orders. The substances included methamphetamine, ketamine, MDMA (ecstasy), cocaine and drug-production chemicals, with a total weight of 2,323 kg.
In addition to the drugs, enforcement agencies also destroyed equipment, raw materials and drug-use paraphernalia used in producing, processing and trafficking drugs, further removing drug-related safety hazards.
The Cambodian government said it would maintain strong pressure on drug-related offences, strengthen prevention education, enforcement coordination and international cooperation, and firmly curb the spread of drug crime to protect public security and social stability.
