King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia sent a message of greetings and blessings to all compatriots for Khmer New Year in the Year of the Horse, 2026.
The message describes Khmer New Year as one of the country’s most important traditional festivals, celebrated each April since ancient times. After the rice harvest, people take a break from work to reunite with relatives and friends near and far, welcome the new year and play traditional games handed down by their ancestors.
The message says the festival celebrates the start of a new year and includes merit-making in remembrance of ancestors. It strengthens bonds within families, between neighbours and across communities as people exchange wishes for health, happiness and success. It also expresses Khmer identity and civilisation, encourages national solidarity and helps preserve and cherish traditional customs.
