Acting Head of State and Senate President Hun Sen said action against online scams must go hand in hand with removing implicated officials. He said some officials had already been removed, but those involved should also face prosecution. This was reported by Hun Sen’s spokesman Chea Thyrith.
The spokesman said Hun Sen made the remarks during a meeting with ministry and institutional leaders, city, district and commune councils, and departments and units under the Phnom Penh administration at the Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre on the morning of May 24, 2026. Hun Sen welcomed the removal of officials and said anti-scam action must be accompanied by action against implicated officials. He proposed two levels of response, stressing that those involved should not merely be dismissed but investigated and prosecuted. Describing the groups and implicated officials as disastrous, he also called for the removal of provincial or district governors and other officials who refused to act or remained inactive.
Acting Head of State Hun Sen also urged the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Interior to establish clearly where foreigners entering Cambodia had come from and which routes they had used. Some came from distant countries with no shared border, he noted, saying this was a global issue rather than a problem for Cambodia alone.
He added that online scams had damaged the nation’s honour and dignity, and that scam groups could become a future threat to the country. Cambodia therefore needed to eradicate them, he said. By: ឡាយ កុល
