Cambodia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, កែវ ឈា, called for renewed international commitment to ending sexual violence in conflict at a high-level open debate of the UN Security Council in New York on July 8, 2026, on respecting and promoting international law for victims of conflict-related sexual violence. The debate was chaired by Judith Suminwa Tuluka, prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in her country’s capacity as Security Council president for July 2026.
The ambassador stressed that all parties to conflict, whether states or non-state actors, must comply with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions. Perpetrators of conflict-related sexual violence must be investigated and prosecuted through fair, credible and victim-sensitive judicial procedures, and a survivor-centred approach must be at the core of all responses.
